The Public’s opinion about technology use during childhood:
On talking with some of my friends from my closer circle (22 - 25 years old) and on talking to some older people (40-50 years old), I was able to see the contrast in their views towards technology and its effects on child development.
The younger generations agree that technology has high potential and in fact, is greatly aiding childhood development, but are aware of the ill effects of the overuse of said technology. Whereas the older generations have this notion that technology wasn’t really needed back in the day, so even if it does add to the development, it is doing more damage due to the uncontrolled usage and its addictive nature.
This contrast in opinions is very normal as one generation was towards the end of their development stage as a child when a piece of technology was introduced, whereas the newer generations are born into an era where the same piece of technology has greatly advanced, and very easily available. This direct exposure in a way allows the newer generation to be more familiar with the technology than the older generation.
Another thing to consider is that current age parents might not be as adept at using current technology as their children due to the fact that, the child is exposed to it at a young age, and is able to grasp way more than the parent about said technology. This also leads to the problem, where the parent is unable to set boundaries or safeguards for the child when it comes to the use of this technology - and this is where things go downhill. As a child, self-control is a tough thing to master and is very time and child dependent. Technology being an easy way to get that dopamine rush and quick gratification serves as a detriment to the child’s development.
But all of this is based on opinions from grown-ups. Let’s see what kids have to say about how technology exists in their life, and how they feel about it through this YouTube video by CBC Kids:
